Fairmont Diner has been serving breakfast, lunch and pies in Rapid City for 11 years. Connie Hounchell, the manager at the diner, explained that after five years at the diner’s original location, the restaurant had to move to a larger venue to accommodate their exponential growth. The diner has been thriving at the new location for six years now.
Fairmont Diner’s menu features homemade meals, classic milkshakes and an assortment of pies and other treats.
“We do a lot of your home cooked, everything’s pretty much made from scratch,” said Hounchell. “Country fried steaks we make in-house. Those are probably our best seller. We’ve got our redneck hash browns, which are huge. Pretty popular on that one, that comes with your ham, peppers, onions, cheese with gravy on the side. Lunch, our roast beef is probably the best roast beef in town. It’s tender, it’s juicy. It’s got great flavor. Phillies and roast beefs are a big win.”
The diner’s dessert selection features an assortment of pies, muffins, ice cream treats and caramel rolls.
“Mom makes her strawberry rhubarb pie, we got cherry pie, apple pie, pecan, pumpkin. We’ve got muffins, we’ve got chocolate chip muffins. blueberry, apple, cinnamon. We do some cream pies now, we got some banana cream, coconut cream, ice cream sundaes, shakes, floats— yeah, you name it, we can pretty much get er done for ya. And then even we’ve got Dad’s famous caramel rolls. He makes those every day for everybody. They love him. Some people put ice cream on their caramel rolls for dessert, so that’s always an option as well,” said Hounchell.
Hounchell hopes to foster a comfortable atmosphere at the diner so customers can sit back and enjoy a homecooked meal.
“I really hope when people walk in the door, they feel that it’s homey,” said Hounchell. “They’re greeted by Dad and they’re greeted by all my staff, which are just like family. And my family is working here as well, so yeah, we try to make you feel like family when you walk through the door. So and I think that is our niche and people love it. They love it when you call them by name, know what they’re having and it’s going well.”
