STURGIS, S.D. – There is now a new family boutique in Sturgis called Barbedwire and Lace LLC. Owner Shawn Fischer, who is the director of the Sturgis Ambulance Service and a long time resident of Meade County, says she wanted to fill a retail need in the community she felt was lacking since the closing of Shopko in March.
“I feel like if I want something done I need to be there. I need to put the man hours into it. Not that I have done everything, I have great family. I want to be part of people coming into our community,” said Fischer.
Opening a business has had a number of challenges. The global pandemic has made it easier for some shoppers to spend virtually outside of their communities. Fischer says all small businesses need support now more than ever.
“When you shop on Amazon, Amazon isn’t paying your kids’ coaching fees. Your kids’ uniforms, you need to support your small communities. Think about their sales tax dollars are not coming back to your community that you want something better for your family in.”
Breanna Price has been the manager of Barbedwire and Lace LLC since its inception in September. She enjoys helping customers pick out the perfect gift for themselves or their loved ones.
“Getting to help and having a relaxed environment for people to come shop in is really important because even for me it’s like nerve-wrecking going shopping. So just being able to help people find, make the shopping experience a little easier is a lot of fun,” said Price.
The shop has amassed an eclectic array of items including holiday decors, baby shower gifts, men’s clothing, and jewelry.
