RAPID CITY, S.D. — Nearly 100 million Americans experience chronic pain. Living with pain can be debilitating and adversely affect everyday life. September is Pain Awareness Month.
A Rapid City woman has a mission to help patients live their best lives free from pain.
Ariann Wolff has a personal story that has lead her into practicing acupuncture, a way to manage pain for patients, free from pharmaceuticals and surgery.
She recently opened West River Acupuncture and Wellness, to help those with seemingly hopeless cases.
Growing up, Ariann’s father had multiple failed back and neck surgeries. He succumbed to living his life in severe chronic pain which led to pain medication.
Ariann Wolff, Practitioner/Acupuncturist, says, “Ultimately, he turned to opioids to manage his pain and it was really difficult to see him going through that, and there wasn’t anything that I could do and that always stuck with me.”
It was after a trip to China and watching acupuncture in practice, she was inspired and began her journey into the Chinese medicine.
Wolff says, “What I saw that acupuncture and Chinese medicine had was the answers that I was looking for and that was mainly, is there another way besides pharmaceuticals and surgery to treat pain.”
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, it’s been said to improve the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific sites on the body – commonly referred to as acupuncture points with a fine needle.
“One of the ways that acupuncture really thrives is treating chronic pain and how it does that is it release those pain relieving hormones in the brain and helps the body help to heal itself and bring balance back to the system,” says Wolff.
Patient Cyndy Henriksen has been receiving treatments for about a month and has received relief from her swollen legs, saying, “It’s worked for me, it’s worth a try if you have an issue that you have no answers for and it’s bothersome.”
In her career field, Wolff hopes to help patients live their best lives and specializes in chronic pain, women’s health, neuropathy, fertility and autoimmune disorders.
Wolff says she feels joy when patients get pain relief.
Wolff encourages people to get a consolation to see if acupuncture is the right treatment for them.
