As the temperatures begin to rise, many are looking for things to do outdoors. Lance Bentley, Vice President of the Black Hills Disc Golf Club, explains more about disc golf and how he got started playing.
“Kind of got involved with the club over the years. I mean, I’ve been playing since 2007, and my brother kind of got me introduced to the sport. He found it in college and came back here and kind of got me involved. And it’s kind of been a throwing contest from there, who could throw farther, and eventually it came down to who is actually better at the game.”
If you are interested in getting involved in disc golf, there are three courses in the Black Hills Area. There is an 18 hole course at Jackson Park in Rapid City, a 27 hole course in Spearfish Canyon and Pageant Hill in Custer.
Bentley advises that it’s easy to get started.
“Just go to a local shop. I mean, there’s Black Hills Vinyl, Ernie Novembers, Scheel’s and Play It Again Sports. They all sell discs and then just come out here and play. I mean, it’s free to play. So, just come out with your friends, come throw some discs.”
Also, if you need some help or potentially a mentor, Bentley says, “There are a couple of us. If you get a hold of, a few of us will come out and we’ll play around with you. We’ll take you out, do some field work. We like to help people evolve, get their game better. I mean, the more competition, the better.”
Black Hills Disc Golf Club hosts lots of different events.
Bentley elaborates, “So we kind of just run events through the area. So any event that gets hosted is ran by the Black Hills Disc Golf Club. We run leagues every Tuesday night. Throughout the summer, we’ll be running more leagues, more doubles events and stuff like that.”
They also host tournaments.
“So this weekend we have two NADGT, which is National Amateur Disc Golf Championship Tours. We have one out in Heart Ranch on Saturday and then one going to be hosted here in Jackson Tour. And with those events, you can actually get qualified to play in the National Amateur Disc Golf Tournament in Austin, Texas in October. So, next couple of events we got are Gillette in two weekends. There’s going to be two tournaments there Saturday and Sunday back to back. And then following that, we’ve got a tournament in Pierre called The Wisher, and that one’s always an amazing event cause folks in Pierre host a good time.”
