Back When They Bucked Rodeo gives back to the community

DEADWOOD, S.D. – The Back When They Bucked Rodeo at the Days of ‘76 Rodeo Grounds in Deadwood does more than provide entertainment to the crowd; it also gives back to the community.

Tif Robertson, Committee Member for the Rodeo, says, “Oh, my gosh. This is the second year of the Western Legacy Foundation. A board member came to the board and said, ‘You know what, we want to do a fundraiser and bronc riding in South Dakota is one of the top events that we all love.’ So, we came up with Back When They Bucked, and we couldn’t think of a better place than to have it in historic Deadwood at the Days of ‘76 Rodeo Grounds.”

The Western Legacy Foundation is something that Robertson says she’s passionate about.

“We were named Black Hills Stock Show Foundation and we just rebranded ourselves in January for the Western Legacy Foundation because that’s what we’re about, preserving the legacy for the youth and rural agriculture. 100% of our profits go out to the community,” Robertson explains. “The Legacy Foundation started about 25, 26 years ago, and it has come from a $500 scholarship to we’re giving $50,000 away this year to kids who are furthering their education in agriculture and rural communities, and we’re very proud of that. So, that’s why Back When They Bucked, 100% of the proceeds on Sunday for that all-day rodeo will go to the Western Legacy Foundation”

Robertson describes Sunday’s events of rodeo.

“It is our second year. We’ll have kick it off at 9 o’clock in the morning with WPRA breakaway. We added this year new, a high school rodeo showcase. So, the four top kids and they are riding for a scholarship and then we kick it off at 3 o’clock with the PRCA extreme broncs on Sunday. So, that’s the big one. New this year, we’re excited. We partnered with the Naja Shriners of Deadwood; they’re really about the children as well.”

Robertson continues with Monday’s schedule as well.

“Back When They Bucked will be producing a PRCA steer wrestling at 9 a.m. on Monday and then at 2 o’clock, we’ll have a high school showcase again. And then at 3 o’clock, the PRC bareback riding will go and Shane O’Connell, Ty Brewer, they’re all entered. I could just go on and on, but anyway, they’re all going to be here. So, we want everybody to come watch them and support the two foundations that are raising funds for each of the organizations and that’s what it’s all about.”

Robertson encourages people to come and bring their family with things the rodeo and town has to offer.

“We’ll have a cotton candy stand and food and beverages for everybody. And then, there’s concerts at Outlaw Square in the evening. The rodeo will be over in plenty of time if you wanted to go up town to Deadwood.”
