BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — After dealing with roadblocks caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Belle Fourche has successfully opened their Free Little Library at the recreation center.
Because so many students spend time at the rec center after school and on the weekends, three Reading Interventionists at South Park Elementary School – Melanie Anderson, Cora Brown, and Connie Parker – decided it was a great place to put a free little library.
The library will operate on an honor system with no cost involved. Students can enjoy a book at home or at the rec center and return it when finished.
A $1,000 grant from Black Hills Reads, along with collaboration from the Belle Fourche School District and the City of Belle Fourche, made the Little Free Library project possible. Since the rec center was able to locate and purchase a bookshelf, the entire $1,000 grant was spent on books.
