BLACK HILLS, S.D. — With the holiday season approaching, you might be wondering when is the time to get a tree permit from Black Hills National Forest.
Easy answer: Now.
They’re available at Forest Service office locations and online. Permits are $10 along with a two-and-a-half dollar processing fee.
Permits are limited to five per person.
The permits must be visible as you remove your tree or trees from the forest. The money raised from the permits is re-invested into forest preservation.
The Forest Service says the trees typically last between two to three weeks in your living room, and there are some size restrictions to keep in mind.
“Maximum height for a tree to be cut is 20 feet, so find a tree that’s less than 20 foot and then also when you cut the tree we just ask that you kept it within six inches of the ground so the stump is you know no longer than six inches on the ground,” said Scott Jacobson, the Public Affairs Officer with the Black Hills National Forest Service.
You can also buy a permit at a bunch of vendor locations.
