The American Heart Association invites everyone to lace up their shoes and walk to ensure that funds are there for future medical advancements in regard to heart disease.
Participants and teams will not physically meet but are invited to get moving at home or around the neighborhood starting at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 19. (or whenever they can).
There are 11 hand-picked locations/trails in the Black Hills and in Badlands that are chosen for this event.
Cory Ferguson, Community Relations Specialist at Monument Health, says, “You can walk just to raise awareness, but more than that you can put together a team or just as an individual and help raise money toward your walk and help raise funds that way to help out the American Heart Association.”
If for some reason you can’t get out to walk, they have suggested a few activities to consider choosing from:
- Get the whole family involved and have an indoor dance party.
- Try out a few strengthening exercises like pushups, lunges and squats.
- Create an at home circuit workout.
Ferguson says, “We wanted to just provide some really fun and exciting trails for people to go on, so we picked some that really have a lot of great scenery a lot of fun things to do… a lot of them are dog friendly so you can take your dogs on your hike with you and get out and be active and enjoy the Black Hills.”
Participants are encouraged to share walking selfies and videos on social media with #sodakheartwalk.
To register, visit www.westcentralsdheartwalk.org. from there, participants can stay up to date by downloading the Heart Walk mobile app and encourage friends and family to as well.
The funds raised from the Black Hills Heart Walk go toward research, advocacy, CPR training and to promote better health.
