RAPID CITY, S.D. — Black Hills Pregnancy Center is a welcoming place to go, and often times the first stop for women or couples when they find out they are pregnant.
Clients are offered private and free care that may include a pregnancy test, ultrasound, mentoring programs, and getting the resources they need feel more comfortable bringing a child into the world.
Monica Tanner, Office Manager at Black Hills Pregnancy Center, says, “We just try to get them connected within the community, so we work with the different agencies to help them be successful in their pregnancy and their parenting.”
Clients can earn baby bucks to shop in the baby boutique, which is filled with new, donated items from the community.
The classes about labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and more set up the parents for life with a newborn and beyond. Certified nurses are on hand to answer questions while clients wait to get into their doctor. The nurses (who are volunteer) can also do ultrasounds.
Tanner says, “We had a couple that had never held a baby before, and they called and said ‘can we take some classes?’ So we bought some dolls so we could help them with diapering and how to hold the baby how to burp the baby and both of them [came in] and they were very appreciative.”
The Center services is helpful for those who are uninsured. Clients receive a ‘baby starter kit’ that includes nine items when they come in for services.
“We have a great labor and delivery class and one of our clients…came in and I just let her watch a few [videos] because she was delivering soon and she actually went in the next day and she goes ‘I’m so glad you let me watch the rest of those videos because it really helped a lot’.”
The Pregnancy Center is funded by donations, like the Baby Bottle Boomerang Program, where people fill a plastic baby bottle with change that is placed at various businesses and events.
