Black Hills Reads recognized for work in supporting early school success

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Black Hills area is being recognized for its work supporting early school success with the “Bright Spot Community” award by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

The campaign honors the Black Hills community for developing a statewide focus on early learning, as well as adapting resources and services during COVID-19.

Supporting grade-level reading in our area is the Black Hills Reads part of the United Way of the Black Hills. The organization focuses on school readiness, summer learning, school attendance, healthy readers, and engaging parents.

Director Kayla Klein says it’s an honor to have Black Hills Reads recognized for their work supporting early school success.

“We felt very fortunate that we were chosen as one of those bright spots. We feel like this work is truly making an impact for our communities and we would love to share our experience and what we’ve been learning with other communities across the United States,” said Kayla Klein, Director of Black Hills Reads.

“Black Hills Reads” and “Early Education South Dakota” are currently working on a registry for their almost two-thousand providers to open lines of communication and provide resources.
