Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo officials report rise in Youth Beef Show participants

RAPID CITY, S.D. — For the second year, young ranchers made their way to the Youth Beef Show at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.

After a strong first year that saw nearly 180 young Ag producers participate, the second time around is even stronger despite the pandemic. Over 250 participants saddled up for what officials hope is an event that will continue to grow and create excitement. This is about a 40 percent rise in participants.

“Nobody starts showing cattle when they’re age 35,” said Ron Jeffries, the General Manager of the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo. “All this starts when they’re kids, so the importance of having the kids starting at age eight, coming out and showing cattle here means we got generations coming after this group to still come participate at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.”

The quality atmosphere creating the ultimate venue for competition.

“Really good facilities, good atmosphere,” said Logan Zemlicka, a competitor from Wolsey, SD. “Everybody’s here, wants to show. Everybody’s excited, we’ve got pretty good stock and we’re ready to get going.”

Some ranchers say that the closer distance to travel to competition paired with a good place to visit makes for a good trip.

“It’s a four-and-a-half hour drive, which honestly to me it’s not so bad because we have a way that allows us to get here quicker,” said Nalea Dunsmore, a competitor from Wessington, SD. “I feel it’s a nice trip honestly, because I like being out here. I like being in Rapid City.”

An event creating excitement and opportunity for young ranchers to visit the Black Hills and leave an impact on more than just their trophy case.
