RAPID CITY, S.D. — Breadroot initiated a money-matching drive benefiting Feeding South Dakota in March when the community need for access to food increased greatly due to COVID-19.
Since then, Breadroot has matched every donation dollar-for-dollar (up to $500 a day), and have raised over $16,000 for Feeding South Dakota.
To accompany the money-matching drive, they have an ongoing food drive for Feeding SD and WAVI.
Co-op staff says the bins are typically overflowing with donations.
Rachel Wester, Marketing Manager for Breadroot Natural Food Cooperative, says, “There is just so many community members that are lacking access to food right now and food is such an essential piece of a livelihood- we just asked ourselves, you know, what can we do as a community partner.”
Every 1-2 months, Breadroot cuts a check to Feeding South Dakota and that money that is donated stays here in the Rapid City community.
Wester says, “When we don’t see the struggle, we don’t think it exists, but it is important to know that even in our community, that struggle does exist and those community members are out there and they need help. Sometimes they are not in a situation where they can ask for help.”
Breadroot will also be partnering with General Beadle Elementary School in the New Year, providing after school food for students.
The matching will be going on for the next couple months.
