RAPID CITY, S.D. – Black Hills Pregnancy Center, in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, hosted a free car-seat safety check at Denny Menholt Toyota in Rapid City on Saturday. The event was specifically geared to help parents and guardians of infant children properly secure their car seats and keep their children safe.
Organizers say there are common misuses of child seats, including the car seat not properly fitting the child’s height and weight. Another common error is when parents bundling up their kids before putting them in the backseat.
“It’s winter time, so you don’t want to put a baby in a car seat with a bulky coat on, because that bulky coat holds a lot of air – but as soon as you’re in a crash, that crash force is gonna push all that air out and it’s gonna cause this harness to be way too loose and the baby will come out,” said Certified Child Passenger Technician Sue Jarvis.
Three free car seats were given during the event as a result of child safety requirements not being met. Black Hills Pregnancy Center and M.A.D.D. will once again be at Toyota Saturday, January 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They encourage everyone to stop by and have their car seats inspected.
