The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program began in 1986 and has a need for volunteer advocates for children who are abused or neglected. Cristina Anderson, Volunteer Coordinator, says “We recruit and support and train volunteers who are then paired with children in foster care. Primarily, the volunteers will just build a relationship with kids, visit them weekly. They ensure their needs are met, and they also advocate for them in court.”
Anderson continues, “We’re always looking for volunteers. There are way more kids in foster care than we unfortunately have volunteers for. And so we have a summer training that we’re still recruiting people for. All you have to do is go to the website, fill out an application, and then we set up an interview and get that process going.”
CASA will be hosting a raffle for a playhouse. One ticket will be sold for $20 and three tickets for $50. There is free delivery of the playhouse within the Rapid City area and all proceeds go directly back to the CASA program.
Anderson continues, “This is our second year of doing it. Last year it was really successful. Like I said, all the proceeds go back to CASA, which we are a nonprofit. So all of our funds raised are just really through grants and different donations and so forth. And so it’s really crucial for us to be able to support our community by receiving support from the community in turn.”
