STURGIS, S.D. — It was classic cars and plane rides in Sturgis Saturday for the Wings ‘N Wheels event.
Held at the Sturgis Municipal Airport, the event featured a car show and barbecue for the public.
It was organized by the city of Sturgis and officials from the airport provided people with a fun way to get out during the summer.
These fly-in events aren’t new, but having the dual event seemed like a fun way to combine everything.
“This is the first time we’ve done a duel event, car show and fly in,” said Director of Planning and Permitting, City of Sturgis, Dave Smith. “We try to have a fly in breakfast or lunch at least once a month throughout the summer other than of course August when the rally is here, but ours have been getting pretty well attended, so we’re really happy.”
Hundreds showed up for the fun, but also to donate what they could to help out the airport, which is in need of interior renovation.
“All the proceeds, it’s a free will donation for everything, all the proceeds will go to help recoup the cost of our food and then everything else that we’re going to have is going to go to help remodel our fbo, which is in need of remodeling inside,” said Smith.
Organizers estimate that roughly three to five hundred guests attended.
