STURGIS, S.D. — The City of Sturgis created another way to honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day Weekend.
It was the first year the city put on the “Salute to our Hereos” event, which focuses on honoring fallen heroes and raising around 65,000 dollars for a Gold Star Memorial Monument to to be placed in Sturgis.
The event kicked off at 5:00 with a one-mile run dubbed the “Main Street Mile”, continued with a community barbecue, live music and a presentation by the Gold Star Monument Committee.
Event planners say that the event serves as a great example as to what they do every year.
“We just thought that this would be a great weekend to try an even and hopefully it will work out, I mean, we thought the salute to the hero, we have the national cemetery just outside of Sturgis, so you know, all encompasses our heroes and that’s what it’s all about,” said Jerry Cole, the Director of Rally & Events for the City of Sturgis.
Local organizations were also able to attend to provide more information about their group free of charge.
