Community Education Classes promote lifelong learning

RAPID CITY, S.D. — 2021 may be the year you try something for the first time.

Tammy Sellars, Program Coordinator for Community Education of the Black Hills, says, “It’s a perfect time to enjoy something, learn something new, meet like-minded people, or discover a new hobby. There is such a wide variety of opportunities this winter and spring – from new languages, arts, cooking…and you can do it from the comfort of your own home or in person with social distancing.”

Community Education Classes are like dipping your a toe in the water of an activity that could lead to a passion you can enjoy the rest of your life. Classes are in a wide range of categories, from active living to home and garden or music. They encompass people of all walks of life to take advantage of affordable learning.

Kim Oslund, owner of SlipKnits, is a Fiber Instructor for Community Education and enjoys teaching a new craft to the class participants.

Oslund says, “Community Ed. is a really nice way to come into a class and learn with other people at your same skill level and create a new friendship on something that is completely different than you have outside your world.”

Kim adds that knitting, crocheting, and crafting in general is for everyone and is a skill that can come in handy during the pandemic. It’s something that can de done at home and promotes stress reduction.

“If you take a class in my store for example, I hope you leave with a foundation to expand upon and make whatever you want to make, because it’s so fun to look at something or wear something and say ‘I made that,’ or give it to a friend, ” Oslund adds.

The winter and spring session includes 70 classes offered throughout the Black Hills region, virtually or in person at participating businesses and organizations. This session includes two free classes – Zoom Basics and Mental Wellness & Resource class.
