Because of their convenient size and light weight, short guns, such as pistols and revolvers, are the preferred firearms among law enforcement officers. Conservation Officer Dekker is very familiar with the inner-workings of the short guns used in law and wildlife law enforcement, and he shared some useful information about the firearms and their uses.
“Pistols are going to be your typical short gun. That’s going to be the shortest barrel you’re going to have out there,” said Officer Dekker. “And then we also have a revolver, so, you know, the classic gun that won the West is going to be your revolver. And this is chambered in a 22 caliber.”
According to Officer Dekker, 22 caliber guns are some of the most popular and practical firearms in the world.
“So a 22 has got some practical purposes. It can be used for varmints and some small game, so rabbits, squirrels, you know. If you’re around your farm, you’re around your ranch, if you’ve got varmints, that would be, you know, rats, mice, gophers, ground squirrels that you’re trying to take care of, a 22 is going to be an easy, easy caliber to do that,” said Officer Dekker.
22 caliber guns are also popular for recreational use because their rounds are inexpensive.
“It’s also very popular recreational round because it is cheap,” said Dekker. “It doesn’t cost a lot to manufacture a 22 round. And what is really cool, even my Glock here, you can get a version of that that’s chambered in a 22 caliber. So, you know, for a law enforcement officer that needs to stay up to date and wants to be proficient in the use of their weapon, they can use a 22 caliber version of their duty weapon and stay proficient without having to spend a lot of money on ammunition.”
22 solid rounds are most effective for target shooting, while a hollow point round is better for efficiently putting animals down when game hunting.
