CUSTER, S.D. — The 36th annual Crazy Horse Volksmarch is set for this weekend – June 5 and 6 – after the Spring event was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The bi-annual event is a 10K (6.2-mile) hike up to Crazy Horse Memorial. The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is the most popular organized hike in the United States, with 15,000 walkers in a record year.
Admission to the Memorial is discounted for hikers ($10/one person, $15/two people, $20/three+ people). Hikers also pay a $3/person fee to the Volkssport Association at registration.
Advanced registration is not required. Registration will begin day-of at 7 a.m. in the upper parking area. The hike starts at 8 a.m. Hikers must register before 1 p.m. and be off the trail by 4 p.m. Late starts are not allowed.
The trail rises 500 feet and can be rugged with steep inclines. Hikers are encouraged to pace themselves as the final elevation is over 6,500 feet. Four checkpoints are spaced out on the route and offer portable restrooms along with snacks and drinks for purchase.
Pets, strollers, and wheelchairs are not allowed during the Volksmarch.
