RAPID CITY, S.D. — Since 2013, Dakota Family Dental has been allowing kids to bring in their unopened Halloween candy for some cold hard cash.
For every pound of candy the kids bring in, they will get one dollar. The amount of candy that the kids can bring in is limited to five pounds, which means five dollars added to their pocket.
While they did not have the buyback program last year, past years have proven to be very successful. 2019 currently holds the record for the year with the most donations, totaling in at 191 pounds.
In addition to cash, children could also win a big prize: a family pass to WaTiki Indoor Waterpark.
“You will get one raffle ticket for every pound that you donate, and that raffle ticket will go towards a family pass at WaTiki,” Dr. Jennifer Friedman of Dakota Family Dental explained. “If you come in costume you’ll get an extra five raffle tickets.”
The raffle and the cash, however, are only one part of the buyback program. Dr. Friedman started it as a way of giving back to troops stationed abroad, inspired by her service in the Air Force.
“I was stationed here at Ellsworth from 2008 to 2011,” Dr. Friedman recalled, “And this is just one way that I can give back to the troops because of my experience that I had as well.”
Kids interested in bringing in their candy only have a limited time to do so as the buyback runs from Monday through Friday and ends on November 5.
