PIERRE, S.D. — In an effort to keep opioids and other prescriptions from misuse, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is hosting National Prescription Take-Back Day next Saturday, October 23.
The event, also held this past spring, resulted in South Dakotans disposing of 1,651 pounds of medication at participating law enforcement agencies statewide.
“Drug addiction and abuse can have devastating impacts on South Dakota families,” said DSS Cabinet Secretary Laurie Gill. “Prescription Take-Back Day is an easy and responsible way we can all help. It may seem like a small thing but if we all take part, it can make a big difference.”
Unwanted medications can also be dropped off year-round at collection bins in local pharmacies and police stations.
Anyone unable to drop off medications at a take-back site can order free DisposeRx packets from the Department of Social Services (DSS). These packets contain an FDA-approved ingredient that mixes with water to neutralize medication so it can safely be disposed of at home.
