DEADWOOD, S.D. — Ghouls, ghosts, and superheroes may be seen roaming the streets of Deadwood this weekend, but no need to worry, it’s just Deadweird.
The annual Halloween celebration kicked off Friday evening with the monster ball at Tin Lizzie.
Over the course of the weekend there will be live music, dancing, and a Peoples’ Choice Costume Contest.
The event is one of the biggest in Deadwood, and following Oktoberfest and events over the summer, organizers expect Deadweird to be a hit this year.

“Deadweird is big for the city of Deadwood, it does draw people from all around,” said John Rystrom, Manager of the Franklin Hotel. “Our hotel bookings are strong, so we’re anticipating another good crowd. You know, it’s kinda hard to tell with everything we have going on, what actually will happen, hopefully people will be safe, and we’ll have a good time, and it’ll be a good turnout.”
Many of the Deadweird festivities will be outdoors, allowing for more social distancing.
Costume judging will take place between the Silverado Casino and the Franklin Hotel, as high turnout has made it impossible to hold the contest in one location.
