Deadwood kicks off sports betting

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Sports betting is now in Deadwood.

It’s the culmination of a historic process that’s taken months to plan, and it was all commemorated Thursday where Deadwood’s first sports bet was made at Tin Lizzie’s.

Casino’s changing their businesses to specifically accommodate a new gambling crowd.

Once sports betting was passed at the state level, it gave casinos and businesses the green light for preparation. Preparation that included incorporating entire sports betting areas to their casinos.

You can place your bets in three places: the Deadwood Mountain Grand, Tin Lizzie’s, and The Gold Rush Casino.

If you’d like to place a bet, visit a sports booking windows or kiosk. Mobile betting will need to be done and placed from a gaming property in Deadwood.

Sports betters are limited for three months in the bets they can make, that means no international sports and only certain prop bets, parlays and future bets.

“It’s conservative to begin with, but for the first 90 days, I think that there’s something for everyone that wants to place a sports wager,” said Mike Rodman, the Executive Director of the Deadwood Gaming Association.

For guidance through the sports betting start up process, the South Dakota Commission on gaming will rely on feedback from the casinos.

“We’ll use that information and that feedback and bring that back to the commission for future considerations that we may need to look at as far as expanding options,” said Karen Wagner, a Chairman with the SD Commission on Gaming.

Casino’s are happy to have sports gambling, but they are already betting on their options to expand.

“As things progress into next year, we just hope to have more betting options, more sports that we can bet on, and a few other type of wagers that the avid better enjoys,” said Tony Sieber, the General Manager of the Gold Dust Casino & Hotel. “But for right now, we’re thankful and happy that we’ve got this start today.”
