BOX ELDER, S.D. — Do you have leftover pumpkins from your Halloween festivities? Well – don’t throw them away – some hungry-hungry farm animals will take them off your hands.
The Charm Farm in Box Elder has all kinds of animals – from llamas to horses, ducks to pigs.
One thing they all have in common?
They love to eat pumpkins.
“Every animal out here enjoys the pumpkins a lot and it’s actually a very quiet calm time on the farm because everybody is fat and happy,” says owner Tamara Lile.
The farm goes through two-thousand pounds of hay a month, and because of the drought, the price has quadrupled. So, they’re supplementing the farm animals diet with delicious, nutritious pumpkins.
“I thought it was a little bit more fun for children you know after they’ve put the time and effort into carving their jack-o-lanterns to know it’s doing something like feeding the rescue animals versus just throwing it away,” Lile says.
Don’t let all your hard work go to waste – drop your pumpkins off at The Charm Farm.
Lile says even your squishy, soft pumpkins will be used – and regular produce is always welcome, so if you’ve got some fruits and veggies going bad, they’ll take those too!
