RAPID CITY, S.D. — On this Martin Luther Jing, Jr. Day comes a celebration of his life in Rapid City.
The event was hosted by Faith Temple Church of God in Christ at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, allowing more space for social distancing.
The celebration was designed to bring the community together to observe the day and remember the works and teachings of Dr. King.
With so much division in the country, Faith Temple felt it was important to bring people together through prayer, and made the theme for this year’s event ‘social justice, the power of a pastor’s prayer.’ Six other pastors from local churches also offered prayers.
Bishop Troy Carr of Faith Temple says the lessons of Dr. King ring true to this day.
“I hope they realize…have a little bit more understanding of Dr. King’s work for peace. Even though his frustration, even though he was disappointed in the government, disappointed in the society and how he and black people were being treated, he still wanted change through peace, he still wanted change through unity,” Carr said. “And so that’s what I hope people get out of today – that there’s unity. We can have peace, we can have unity and it comes from prayer through God.”
Mayor Steve Allender was in attendance and presented an official proclamation honoring Dr. King.
