PIERRE, S.D. — Tuesday afternoon, the South Dakota Department of Social Services kicked-off a campaign designed to strengthen South Dakota families and keep them together.
In a ceremony held in Pierre and streamed over Facebook Live, DSS announced its Stronger Families Together campaign. The initiative, in partnership with South Dakota Kids Belong, calls for more foster families in the state that can provide a safe place for children while the family gets the help it needs to be stronger.
Governor Kristi Noem, whose own family has experience being a foster home, was Tuesday afternoons keynote speaker and also talked about the need for more adoptive families.
“While we have kids that are in foster homes and can be reunified, those that can’t…they need a permanent home to a be part of. They need a family; they need to know what that feels like so that they can make sure they have the best opportunity to be successful and to break the cycle,” Noem said.
The Department of Social Service has set a goal to recruit 300 foster families by April 30, 2022.
