Easter Sunday brings more people back into the church for service

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The United Methodist Church in Spearfish saw a lot of faces they had been missing during the pandemic as it held Easter service in person this year.

Social distancing and masks are still present as more people get used to going back out in public.

Dave and Brenda Swanson, members of the United Methodist Church, said, “Kinda cool to be in the sanctuary today. It was probably one of the bigger crowds we’ve been able to see. With people still kind of in masks and that kind of stuff you know taking the cautions and things. But you know it was just really kinda nice to see that crowd. And first of April it sort of feels like everything sorta opening up and starting over brand new.”

In the spirit of gathering for the Easter holiday, the church also put on an Easter egg hunt for the kids.

There were two different Easter egg hunts between the churches two masses. There were seven kids in each hunt and each kid was able to get 21 eggs.

“Dave called me Sunday night and said it’s gonna be great weather on Easter Sunday, should we do an Easter egg hunt? And I’m like uh yeah, I’m in…so we did it very last minute. Since it was so last minute, lots of times we’ll do this one Easter egg hunt in between services. This year we did one after each service and I think that went really nice, I liked it,” Brenda and Dave said.

The church plans to hold in person services throughout the year and looks forward to doing the same for holiday services.
