ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – A new pair of hands will be at the helm of the world’s largest B-1 bomber combat wing as of Friday morning.
Col. Joseph Sheffield is scheduled to take command of the 28th Bomb Wing during a special ceremony.
Sheffield is no stranger to Ellsworth, having served at the base previously as a squadron and wing weapons officer, director of operations for the 34th Bomb Squadron “Thunderbirds,” commander of the 37th Bomb Squadron “Tigers,” and deputy commander of the 28th Operations Group. He commanded the 37th BS on two deployments to Southwest Asia.
The U.S. Air Force Academy graduate is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours including 1,125 combat hours.
Sheffield comes to Ellsworth from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, where he served as the 36th Operations Group commander.
The outgoing commander of the 28th BW, Col. David Doss, has been handpicked for a position at Air Force Global Strike Command
headquarters at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana.
