Since 2005, Sheree Schriver has owned and operated Red’s Grill & Pub in Sturgis, South Dakota. Schriver is originally from DeRidder, Louisiana, and she brought authentic Cajun flavor with her when she moved to the Midwest.
Kat Fenner, a bartender at Red’s Grill & Pub, is proud to be both an employee and a customer at the restaurant.
“We still offer Cajun food here,” said Fenner. “We have red beans and rice, gumbo, catfish po’boy. We still have that good stuff. Just good food, man. Like really honestly, we enjoy eating here just as much of our customers do. When we tell you something’s good, it most likely is. We just enjoy serving people and being part of our community and just having fun and enjoying ourselves.”
In addition to the classic Cajun favorites, the menu at Red’s features some original— and top secret— recipes.
“We have everything you can imagine,” said Fenner. “We have everything from burgers to pasta to barbecue plates. Then we have homemade soups that our owner makes every day. We don’t know the ingredients because that’s our secret recipes, and people come back for them, lemme tell ya on that.”
Red’s Grill & Pub is home to a wine and beer bar which is well-stocked with wine-based liquor, a key ingredient in some of the restaurant’s best-selling drinks.
“So, we are able to make you anything that you can think of. Our biggest selling points are usually our sangrias and our Bloody Marys, and I can say that my Bloody Marys are top notch,” said Fenner.
The restaurant is equipped with both indoor and outdoor seating, including a large patio which is perfect for bigger groups, especially during the bike rally.
Community is important, and the customer-employee relationships which have been fostered over the years are what make Red’s such a special place for everyone who enjoys it.
“We enjoy living here,” said Fenner. “We’re all locals. I mean, we really work here, we know our regulars, we know our locals, we remember their drinks and food. I mean, we enjoy seeing everybody and, you know, we always make sure that when our military comes in or our police, they get discounts or if not, their meals get paid for. I mean, that’s a big part for us. We like to support our community and we like to be here.”
Red’s recently changed its name, but Fenner assures customers that the restaurant, employees and menu have remained the same.
“If anybody gets confused with the questions of why our name changed, it purely has to do with the fact that during our closedown during COVID, we weren’t able to understand if it was Rapid or Sturgis for those orders. So we ended up just making our name change. So it got a little less confusing for people. But like I said, it’s the same people, same everything.”
