RAPID CITY, S.D.— Monday, April 12, FFA students got the chance to talk with Ag supporters in business and higher education.
The career carnival hosted 35 booths at the James Kjerstad Event Center for the FFA members to find out more about a certain occupation or training as their next step in life.
Monday was also a chance for students to compete in areas like food science, horse judging, and veterinary science.
Amanda Scott with Agtegra Cooperative, says, “The Ag industry is benefiting so much from FFA – these kids are coming out with an understanding of Ag that they wouldn’t normally have if it weren’t for FFA. They’re coming into our field having a little bit of knowledge, a little bit of background that sets them apart from other students.”
During the convention, students hone leadership and career skills, network, make new connections, and recognize accomplishments.
Lillyanna Wagner, President of the FFA Wall Chapter, says, “There’s lots of colleges here and there’s also lots of different careers that you could go and check out if you are interested.”
As an FFA member, community service is a priority, and students took time Monday to make tie blankets as a part of their FFA Day of Service.
Students worked on the blanket project from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday.
A part of the FFA motto is living to serve, and this project is a way for students to give back to the communities they live in.
Lauren Stiefeater, the McCook Central FFA Chapter President, says, “So in our FFA motto it actually says, “living to serve,” so here we are serving our different communities and every year we have a different service project – some years we have done meals for hope – we’ve packed different meals and just different ways that we can give back to our community as much as they give us our support.”
Chapters will take completed blankets home to their communities to distribute.
The FFA convention wraps up Tuesday, April 13.
