SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center in Spearfish hosted Black Hills State University’s first ever student and faculty art show. The gallery was initially scheduled to be for Seniors only at the Dahl Arts Center last March, but was cancelled due to COVID.
Organizers saw an opportunity this year for BHSU faculty to collaborate with last year’s graduating class and showcase both of their artistry. As submissions trickled in, one theme was repeated in many of the art forms.
“As the show really started to come together and culminate what we really saw was a pandemic-heavy kind of a show. Some of students were making art responding to the pandemic and also we found other faculty members and students kinda digging up forgotten works as they’re kind a cleaning out their spaces and revisiting their old work,” said BHSU Associate Professor Desy Schoenewies.
Sculptural and 3D-printed pieces are also featured in the art show. The Opera House is hoping to make this newfound partnership between student and faculty an annual display. The show runs until February 12 and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
