RAPID CITY, S.D. — For the fifth consecutive year, banners featuring the photos and stories of local veterans are lining the streets of downtown Rapid City.
The Veterans Honor Banner Project was founded in 2017 by Air Force veteran Bill Casper, who was inspired by a similar project in Kansas.
The banners feature a photo of the veteran along with their information, their service branch, dates of service, and battles in which they fought.
New to the lineup this year – a banner for marine “Flying Ace” Joe Foss – a veteran of World War II and one-time South Dakota governor.
Foss was awarded the medal of honor for his involvement in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
He later became the first commissioner of the American Football League, which later merged with the NFL.
