RAPID CITY, S.D. — On Tuesday, four students at South Park Elementary in Rapid City, who are members of their student council, got a lesson about how local government operates.
The students had a field trip to city hall and met with Mayor Steve Allender in the common council chambers. The mayor and the student lawmakers discussed the difficulty in pleasing everyone and their role in being the voice for the students.
Allender says he wanted to stress being a good and kind citizen, even if you don’t agree with someone else.
“It’s ok to work in government to have a different opinion, to still be cordial and cooperative and work together. And so I know kids have this down but it’s a little different, more difficult when you get to be an adult to keep that perspective,” Mayor Allender said.
The kids also received a small memento from Mayor Allender.
