A fast-spreading wildfire, that started Wednesday in Lawrence County just five miles from Sturgis has been stopped in its tracks at eight acres, thanks to the efforts of multiple fire agencies.
The Kirk Hill Fire was reported by a police officer around mid-afternoon on Wednesday. It went quickly from 40 acres to 80 before the night was through.
Thanks to efforts from federal, state and local crews on the ground and in the air, forward progress was held at 80 acres.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials are asking everyone to use caution when visiting the Black Hills.
“Just be careful with what you’re doing recreating out there,” said Kirk Hill Fire Incident Commander Ben Dempsey, “And just be aware of where you’re going especially whether you’re going off road or on a trail, just be aware of what you’re doing out there and just be careful”
As of 5 p.m. Thursday evening, the Kirk Hill Fire is 100% contained. Crews will continue to patrol and conduct mop up operations in the coming days. Smoke will also be present for the next several days.
No structures were lost in the fire.
