RAPID CITY, S.D. — Pennington County Toys for Tots held its annual drive-through toy distribution today at the Central States Fairgrounds.
In years past, parents have been able to pick which gift they wanted for their children. This year, to follow CDC guidelines, volunteers pre-packed boxes determined by age and gender of the child.
Last year Toys for Tots distributed nearly five thousand gifts to kids; this time around, they received more registrations due to the pandemic.
“There are so many people who are appreciative and you know that’s what makes it all worthwhile is the people who come through and wish us a Merry Christmas, thank us, so we have had quite a few people do that. You know we had more people register so yeah its been great,” said MaryAnne Whittle, Pennington County Toys for Tots Coordinator.
Pennington County Toys for Tots believes every child between newborn and 18-years should receive a gift for Christmas.
MaryAnne added, “Such a collaborative effort – you know with the community people donating and then people volunteering – it’s just a really good feeling to help people in need for sure.”
This was the fifth year that Pennington County Toys for Tots has conducted a toy drive for families in need during the holidays.
