STURGIS, S.D. — A foundation that honors Gold Star Families is getting their message out during the Sturgis Rally.
The Woody Williams Foundation is set up at the Harley-Davidson Rally Point with a traveling memorial dedicated to honoring the Gold Star Families.
The mission is to honor, recognize, and serve gold star families and their loved ones.
The foundation has 86 permanent memorials on display in all 50 states, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam with another 76 memorials are in the works.
During their time in Sturgis, the Woody Williams Foundation is raising awareness of the work it’s doing to honor these families.
“Being in a place like Sturgis with the amount of people that are in one area kind of coming by taking pictures and asking what this is,” says Alex Nauert, Woody Williams Foundation director of programs. “Our main mission here is to ensure that we can tell people and explain to people what a gold star family is and to be able to spread that awareness and education.”
The foundation is also accepting donations which will go towards a permanent memorial in Sturgis. The new memorial is expected to be placed and dedicated at the Harley-Davidson Rally Point during next year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
