PIERRE, S.D. — On Monday, Gov. Noem issued an executive proclamation naming May as Mental Health Awareness Month, with the goal of raising awareness about mental health challenges and the resources available.
33% of South Dakotans reported in 2019 that their mental health was not good for at least one day in the previous month.
The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) contracts with 11 accredited community mental health centers, including those that help with substance abuse, psychiatric conditions, and individuals in state incarceration. Mental health and substance use disorder treatment and services are available even without insurance or money to pay.
