Hjem A.M., meaning “home” in Danish, is an exciting new restaurant located in the heart of Custer.
Co-owner Camillia Belland and her fiancé met in Custer two years ago, and have since made it their mission to create a restaurant where visitors from all over can feel right at home.
According to Belland, the restaurant’s origin is somewhat serendipitous.
“My sister does Skogen Kitchen just down the road, and they used to do breakfast and they no longer could do it,” said Belland. “So they gifted us their menu, and so we roll out here on on Main Street and it’s just been amazing.”
The menu at Hjem A.M. is unique, featuring favorites from the Black Hills area with a Danish twist,
“We’ve got a lot of just really different things from the area,” said Belland. “So we’ve got a morning walleye that’s going to come to you with a mint emulsion and it’s going to come to you with bacon, potato, bacon, hash and sunny side egg on top of it. We’ve got a what’s called the mojo, and that’s going to come to you with fried chicken, and that fried chicken is going to be soaked in buttermilk and Frank’s red hot and it’s going to come to you on top of a pancake. The pancakes are very Danish style, and the Franks red hot goes right on top of that bad boy with some maple syrup. And it’s something you dream about, that’s for sure.”
Very popular at Hjem A.M. are the deviled eggs, which are topped with salmon, local honey and house made crème fraîche.
With a menu as diverse as Hjem A.M.’s, Belland encourages visitors to come back and try something new every time.
Hjem A.M. is open 8-11 a.m. Wednesday-Friday and 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
