RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dewayne Mcgarvin has been packing up a lawn chair each day for the last couple weeks to brighten the day of drivers passing by.
Mcgarvin says, “I love it out here, you know you got all these people and most of them are smiling it seems to… I know it brightens my day.”
He is getting his fill of unique socializing during a time when the standard opportunities are void.
Mcgarvin says, “I decided, the heck with it, I can’t go and be with people or be around or you know, this pandemic, they lock you down… this way I can kind of intermingle with a lot of people I don’t breath on them and they don’t breath on me so we all get along pretty good that way. I’d say 80% of the people honk or wave and there is no real problem.”
Even on the hottest of days, he’ll stay out to wave for hours on end.
“One lady hollered- ‘God Bless you’, and I thought that was kind of nice,” says Mcgarvin.
Some passersby have stopped to show their appreciation — gifting him cookies, sunscreen and water.
Dewayne is inspiring others so effortlessly, including employees at Holiday Hills.
Bethany Bogner, Holiday Hills Estates Resident Experience Coordinator, says, “I see Dewayne as an inspiration, there is so much negativity with this virus and he is trying to make people smile- and brighten their days, he goes down the hill and just waves at them for hours everyday and comes back with the biggest smile on his face and it’s just amazing how many people he touches everyday.”
He’s helping to lift the spirits of many in the community- one wave at a time.
Mcgarvin has been living at Holiday Hills Estates for about 3 years. He’s a retired military member and postal worker.
