RAPID CITY, S.D. — Mayor Allender declared August 1 – 7 as Farmers Market Week in Rapid City. Councilwoman Laura Armstrong delivering the proclamation at the Farmers Market on Omaha Street Wednesday morning.
The Black Hills Farmers Market, which has been in operation for more than thirty years, provides agricultural producers an outlet to share their goods with those looking to shop local.
The market brings vendors selling fresh produce, canned goods, handmade crafts, and even flowers from Rapid City and the surrounding areas – allowing shoppers the chance to know where and how their food was made.
“I love the sense of community…Having everybody come down here…The repeat customers that you get to meet and see, and you learn about their lives because they share just a little bit every week,” says Amber Herder with Deb’s Downhome Delights.
The mayor’s proclamation cites the economic benefit of farmers markets, with a contribution of around nine million dollars annually to the U.S. economy.
South Dakota’s agricultural producers taking advantage of the demand for fresh, local goods.
Herder says, “We just love [the] Farmers Market…We’re glad that it’s a resource we get to use to sell our products…For people to come and buy our products…We just hope that everybody comes down and shops local.”
The Farmers Market runs year-round with curbside pickup available.
