J.R.’s RhodeHouse BBQ Pit
J.R.’s RhodeHouse BBQ Pit in Summerset offers Texas-style barbecue by using quality meats and simple ingredients.
Justin Rhodes, the owner, has been barbecuing for about 20 years. But what started as a hobby…
“I kind of fell in love with the passion for it and took it a little further.”
What Is Offered?
Brisket, pork, turkey, ribs, sausage and sides make up the menu. Rotating specials appear Saturdays during the fall season
Sides include a green chili, white mac and cheese, pit smokehouse, beans, chips, corn, homemade cornbread and slaw.
“I just try to do it every day the best I can, and be consistent and just keep it simple. And that’s about it. Just do with passion every day.”
When Can You Go?
They are open Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., or until they sell their product. If they sell out of a product, Justin will post everything up through Facebook.
“I post all my specials and daily stuff through Facebook and Instagram as well.”
Catering & Best Sellers
J.R.’s BBQ caters for parties, weddings or any gathering.
The best seller by far, Justin says, is the brisket. That is followed by turkey, then ribs, house-made sausage and pulled pork.
What To Expect
When inside, visitor’s will quickly notice the business has a western and ranch feel.
“I’ve always been a big fan of Deadwood and Clint Eastwood and Josey Wales and just old Westerns. And so instead of a barbecue and blues joint, I went more of a Western to fit out here in western South Dakota.”
Customers serve themselves, like a traditional barbecue restaurant where they come in, see the ordering menu and then help themselves to a choice of beer, soda, water, tea and lemonades.
“That’s why we’re popular at lunchtime, as you can get your stuff in less than five minutes,” Justin said.
The inside can seat about 42 people, with an additional 25-30 in outdoor seating.
