RAPID CITY, S.D. — The first step on the road to the national finals, the Knights of Columbus are holding the local competition for it’s 50th annual Free Throw Championships for boys and girls.
The competition is open to kids ages nine to 14. The Knights of Columbus started the event back in 1972 to provide an athletic outlet and encourage sportsmanship and healthy competition.
Kids shoot 15 free throws to determine the local champion in each age group. Then those winners shoot 25 foul shots to compete in districts.
Dustin Wagner, Grand Knight for Council 1489, said, “Knights of Columbus do community events and charity events and all kinds of stuff. And this is just kind of one of our fun ones, its a chance to compete and have some fun. Anytime we can give them another activity, it seems like we are a little short on that these days.”
The district champions will then compete at the state level which will also be held in Rapid City.
