John and Crystal Wiles, realtors from Hermosa, opened Lazy R Bar & Grill in March of 2019 to satisfy a need in the community.
“The community needed a gathering place and somewhere for everyone to come in and have a good time and see each other and get a good meal,” said Crystal.
The Wiles designed the bar to cater to the specific demographic within their community, and that personal touch has made Lazy R a favorite spot among locals.
“We’re a ranch community out here. I mean, it’s kind of an eclectic group out in Hermosa, but that’s kind of the core of, you know, most of the people around here is a ranching community,” said Crystal. “We’re in beef country and that’s what we try to cater to. We try to support the beef industry. It’s important to this area. It’s kind of the drive behind our menu and what we do,” added John.
Lazy R’s menu features regional beef and daily specials including chicken fried steak on Thursday nights and prime rib on Friday and Saturday nights.
“So we’ve got really good hamburgers. We’ve got basket food. Steak tips are really popular. Homemade bread pudding, that’s pretty popular with caramel sauce,” said the Wiles.
In addition to their fresh burgers and fried foods, Lazy R offers a full bar and local beer on tap.
“We do have beer on tap,” said Crystal. “I try to frequent the local breweries and if not local, regional. But that’s kind of fun to do. We only have four on tap, but they’re rotating seasonal and different breweries from around the Hills. We do have a full bar, full liquor license.”
Lazy R Bar & Grill is conveniently located on the northernmost edge of Hermosa, right on the Heartland Expressway just 12 miles from Rapid City. Lazy R is open 4-9 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. The restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday.
