Lead V.F.D. holds first ever 9/11 Memorial Mile fundraiser

RAPID CITY, S.D. — On Saturday, the Lead Volunteer Fire Department held its first ever 9/11 Memorial Mile fundraiser.

Participants began their walk at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center and concluded at the Lead Fire Station.

The goal of the fundraiser was to raise money for new equipment for the lead V.F.D. and for the Tunnels To Towers Foundation which honors those that lost their lives 20 years ago.

Organizers say that it was important to support the tunnels for tower because of their work in helping those that need the support and were impacted from that day.

“It’s a pretty amazing foundation that works with and supports the family members of those who are affected by 9/11 and their children and their family,” said Amelia Stewart, the Head Auxiliary Member with the Lead V.F.D. “And so we we thought especially this year starting out, that was a really important foundation to support.”

Those that participated in the event also shopped in businesses on Main Street along the way and were given the chance to win a drawing after the walk ended.
