RAPID CITY, S.D. — Monument Health held a 5K walk/run event Sunday for local kids who have fought big battles, like cancer or heart conditions.
The new event – dubbed the Little Black Hills Battles 5K – was held at Storybook Island with around 200 participants showing their support.
While it was a good event to bring people outside on a rainy day, it was more about sharing the story of the kids’ who have their own big battles.
“A lot of the kids that we’re showcasing today were born really early, required numerous surgeries including heart surgeries. Some of them come to us on a monthly basis for outpatient infusions for chronic diseases that they have and then we also are showcasing one sweet little girl who is in remission from cancer and received her chemotherapy at Monument Health,” said Amanda Horsley, Pediatric Nurse Clinician at Monument Health Rapid City.
The 5K started at Storybook Island and ended at Canyon Lake, which included a pit stop with snacks for the participants.
