Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder for men about the importance of staying healthy and active and getting screened- setting an example for the next generation.
Dr. Stephen Neabore, Internal Medicine Physician at Monument Health says, “A lot of times men come in and they basically think they are invincible you know they say, I’ve been doing fine for all these years, but it doesn’t mean everything inside is fine. You might feel fine but there might be cholesterol building up, your blood pressure can be high- that puts more stress on your arteries.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die from three leading causes: heart disease, cancer and unintentional injuries.
It’s important to ask your doctor about the recommended screening guidelines.
Neabore says, “As we all age, we have a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, different types of cancer so those are things we talk about depending on the age of the patient.”
Many factors play into overall health like exercising and eating healthy and getting regular checkups and taking care of mental health. And getting a physical can help uncover any hidden dangers — they’re typically part of an annual wellness exam.
“If your cholesterol is high, there is no signs of it but it can be building up in your arteries and eventually you are have a heart attack or stroke so we can check those things, that is an easy blood test- takes you know just a couple seconds. Checking your blood pressure is also really important that is something where you are typically not going to feel high blood pressure, especially if it’s just a little bit elevated but that is something your doctor can measure really easily and we can talk about ways to bring that down,” says Neobore.
