RAPID CITY, S.D. — The word Meraki means to do something with soul, creativity, or love; to put something of yourself into your work.
That is what owners of Meraki Box are doing – combining their passions of helping people take on fitness and health challenges through the discipline of boxing and circuit based & strength training.
Classes are tailored to fit the participant.
Ryan McGivern, Owner of Meraki Box and personal trainer/boxing coach, says, “Boxing includes everything from basic skill, stability and balance all the way up to athleticism and power. I’ve trained anyone from eight years old just with coordination to 88 years old; somebody with Parkinson’s Disease. My goal with boxing is to show everybody that boxing is for everybody. Most boxing gyms are looking for that one in a million to create a champion – I want to help create a champion in everybody who walks through the door.”
McGivern, who began his professional career as a nurse, began boxing at the age of 14, and says although some boxing gyms can be intimidating, participants to his classes will encompass everyone at every level.
McGivern says, “Boxing, we call it the sweet science, because everything we do is built in a specific manner to build the best-rounded athlete we can. You don’t have to come in here and know how to box, your exception is to come in here, give me 100%, whatever that means for you.”
Benefits of boxing can include mental focus, accuracy, endurance and strength. Boxing can provide a whole body workout.
As many seek to revitalize their fitness regimen in the new year, the goal at Meraki Box is to transform the way of life.
Mike Minor, Owner of Meraki Box & personal trainer, says, “And you’ll find most people are on a roller coaster, you’ll see these influxes at certain points and everyone kind of gets geared up for they big push for the new year, but we want a lifestyle.”
Meraki Box also focuses on nutrition with clients.
McGivern says he has enjoyed training multi-generational families.
Meraki Box will host an open house Friday, January 1st from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. They are located at 424 Quincy Street in Rapid City.
