RAPID CITY, S.D. — Reports of three missing children in one day prompted the Rapid City Police to remind residents about how making a report as soon as possible is critical.
While all three children were found, police say parents need to report a missing child right away, adding that the longer police have to wait to start investigating, the more difficult it makes to find the child.
Authorities also say to have a good idea of what they’re wearing, where they’re going, what time they left, and when they should have returned.
It’s also vitally important for all parents to communicate with other parents — especially if their children are friends and hang out together.
“Make sure you contact with that parent, cause we have kids that run away and they’ll go to a friends house and the friend’s parents won’t know that they’re actually missing, so make sure that you’re communicating with if you have kids coming to your house…make sure their parents know that they’re there,” said Lt. Tim Doyle with the Community Engagement Unit.
Police also say if you do see something unusual – say something. Report it – and you don’t have to give your name.
“If they’re more comfortable doing that, you can do that through the 411 app, or you if you choose to actually call in either through 9-1-1 or non-emergency dispatch, you can elect to remain anonymous there too,” said Brendyn Medina, the Community Relations Specialist with the RCPD.
Police also say to have an up-to-date photo of your child.
