RAPID CITY, S.D. — On Tuesday morning “Moms Demand Action” held a small ceremony, honoring a new mural in art alley. The mural symbolizes the fight against gun violence.
“Moms Demand Action” is a nationwide organization that advocates for gun safety and gun violence prevention.
The chapter in Rapid City, called for the mural, which is inspired by an executive proclamation issued by Mayor Steve Allender. In his proclamation he encouraged safe gun storage.
“It’s just the message that gun safety involves locked, unloaded guns. Keeping them out of the hands of children for example, keeping them away from people that shouldn’t have them,” says Karen Pettigrew with Moms Demand Action.
The mural features the word “safety,” with a gun lock and a key hanging from two of the letters in the word.
Artist, Focus Smith says, “it’s a way to broadcast a safer environment for adults and students and helping to get across the important and vital message of gun safety.”
He added a few finishing touches, this during the recognition ceremony on Tuesday.
“We wanted to keep it as simple as possible, just to convey that message so that way it didn’t get mixed up with any stylized writing, so that way it maintains its integrity,” says Smith.
According to “Moms Demand Action,” 80% of gun deaths in the state are suicides, and part of their advocacy involves keeping firearms away from people that are mentally unwell.
