RAPID CITY, S.D. — Now that the FDA has approved Pfizer’s vaccine for 12-to-15 year-olds, Monument Health says its ready to get started.
Monument’s President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Shankar Kurra, says with an abundance of vaccine available, there is little concern of running out of doses for the younger kids.
Dr. Kurra says that once the vaccine becomes available, it’s a good idea to get your child in – as the risks associated with the shot are minimal, compared to being infected with the coronavirus.
“The chance of you playing dice with one of your children – and speaking now as a physician and as a parent of one of those – that it is not worth the risk. And given the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine, I wouldn’t take a chance with that,” Dr. Kurra said.
Kurra also cautions that the medical community is still unsure of COVID’s long-term effects on the lungs of both children and adults, so he urges anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to make an appointment.
